The Culture Within
This purpose of this assignment is to: (1) increase your awareness and understanding of "isms" and implicit bias; and (2) increase your insight into your own biases (we all have them) and consider how you might begin to unlearn them.
- Listen to the podcast The Culture Inside (found here and there is a link in Blackboard under Assignments). While the focus of the podcast is race, consider how implicit bias and stereotyping exists around other groups also.
- Write a one to two page, double spaced reflection essay on the podcast, addressing the following:
- Give a brief summary of the podcast, and include discussion of the following key concepts/ideas: impression management, implicit bias, stereotypes, culturally taught connections, and learning vs. unlearning. If you think there are other key concepts that are important, please mention those also.
- What new insights did you gain about the micro, mezzo and/or macro systems of which you are a part? (e.g. what messages are you aware of receiving that pair positive or negative values with certain characteristics in others? What impact has such bias had on you or those around you?) This does not have to be limited to race.
- Include any other insights regarding your thoughts and/or your reactions, etc., and discuss what you think you may do differently going forward to counter your own implicit bias or "isms"?
