​Servant leaders’ first instinct is service, rather than leadership, and their focus is on the support and guidance of others to perform their roles effectively (Savel & Munro, 2017; Thomas, 2018) This leadership style makes a lot of sense for nurse leaders, as the nursing profession fundamentally has a desire to serve and are always seeking to provide patient-centered care to improve the health and lives of those they care for.  Servant leaders are good listeners, understand the strengths and weaknesses of those they work with, and plan with the bigger picture in mind (Thomas, 2018).   

Listening and empathy are two important qualities of servant leadership that support Interprofessional communication in patient care.  First, these qualities ensure that the patient's needs and desires are heard and communicated into the plan of care allowing for truly patient centered-care (Best, 2020).  Next, these qualities cultivate strong relationships with colleagues by the needs of others to provide the best patient care possible (Best, 2020).  Additionally, servant leaders have the opportunity to advance the profession of nursing by communicating the needs of nursing professionals when making healthcare policies (Best, 2020).
