Purpose Statement
The purpose of this research is to conduct an in-depth analysis of the impact of the MIoT on healthcare delivery, costs, and access for older adults aged 65 years and above. The United States spends the most (17% of its gross domestic product (GDP)) on health care, yet has the poorest health outcomes of the top 11 high-income countries (OECD, 2020; Schneider et al., 2017; Tikkanen et al., 2020). When compared to the other high-income countries, the United States also fails when it comes to access, administrative efficiency, and equity (Schneider et al., 2017). There’s projected to be a shortage of health care professionals including doctors, nurses, pharmacists, and social workers, in comparison to the number of older adults who will require health care (Supper et al., 2015). Adults aged 65 years and older are increasing in number, both in the United States and internationally. Given their risk for multiple chronic conditions and morbidity, any intervention or decision affecting healthcare service delivery, access, and costs will directly impact older adults. With statistics indicating that older adults in America will comprise 25% of the entire population within the next 10 years, the healthcare industry has started to adopt various innovative methods to lower healthcare costs, increase efficiency in service delivery, and enhance health care access. MIoT is one of the most widely used methods, and thus has required standardization and regulation across the entire healthcare industry (Fraga-Lamas et al., 2016).
I propose a study using a mixed-methods design using both quantitative and qualitative data. A mixed methods research design will reveal how the increased costs, decreased volume of providers, and limited access to care for millions of insured and uninsured Americans has impacted the lived experiences of older adults since medical services have been integrated with electronic devices. Quantitative data will be collected to understand how MIoT has impacted morbidity and mortality rates, reimbursements, and insurance. Qualitative data will be collected to further understand the likelihood older adults will start or continue to use medical technologies and how satisfied they are with the experience.
Goals
The general purpose of this study has been divided into three specific achievable goals: Determine how MIoT influences service delivery, examine how MIoT affects healthcare access, and analyze how MIoT impacts healthcare costs for older adults aged 65 years and above.
Research Questions
The research will be guided by the following question: How does the standardization and regulation of Medical Internet of Things (MIoT) impact healthcare service delivery, costs, and access for older adults?
