This technology could prove incredibly powerful once we get the costs down and better understand the effects of these treatments.  The ability to not just treat but cure a large number of disorders at their source is a worthy goal.  

One other facet of this technology is the potential to not just cure but to alter based on other motivations.  There is the possibility that we could advance this technology to a level where we could alter our or our offspring’s genetic makeup down to eye color, intellect, strength, etc.  This raises many ethical and economic questions.  One fear is that this could further divide the wealthy and poor by allowing some to radically improve their genes and leave others behind.  The consequences of such a technology could prove incredibly disruptive and can only be guessed at.  Technologies as powerful as genetic editing have the potential to reshape society at large, much the same way as the internet has.
