Tutorials will offer grammar instruction and an introduction to the case studies and topic for the WT2.

Below are 2 main items. The first item comprises the general instructions and specific question for the WT2. The second item relates to help for students who are experiencing disruption in their lives and studies.

Item 1:

WT2 key themes:

• Language discrimination is discussed in all 4 texts.
• Accent and non-standard grammars are areas where people feel either in control or powerless.
• Real social disadvantage is the result of language discrimination.
• Daisy Li experiences emotional and social isolation, but Robyn Kina experiences real physical harm (incarceration and violence).
• All of these texts model persuasiveness, but the scholarly texts are longer and more difficult to read.
• Incidents of discrimination are common, but systematic, or chronic social disadvantage is a real fact of life for many people

• Racism may be a factor in each of these instances, but accent and non-standard grammar are also features of English for people who may be ethnically part of the majority.

Key requirements of the WT2:

• Some referencing, improving on the WT1 effort.
• Binary approach: use opposing arguments and evidence.
• 500-600 word limit.
• Due midnight Friday the 20th August.
• Clearer essay structure, with introduction, body paragraphs and conclusion.
• Explicitly refer to the experiences of Robyn Kina and Daisy Li.

This is the question for WT2:

The experiences of Daisy Li and Robyn Kina are different, but they are also similar. Compare and contrast these experiences and explain why they are significant in reflecting wider social prejudices.
