Illegal Immigration

The issue of illegal immigration is one of the most controversial topics in the United States. Immigration is not a new issue to Americans, as the country was founded on the concept of immigration. After the discovery of the Americas by Christopher Columbus in the 16th century, present-day territories constituting the United States experienced an influx of immigrants, especially from Europe. The country also welcomed thousands of African immigrants, most of whom entered the country as slaves. For centuries, the country remained open for immigration, especially from various countries and regions across the globe, as it was its primary method of populating the vast country. During that era, the concept of illegal immigration was not a major issue, as the country was open to all, except those from banned countries such as China and those with criminal records.  However, in the 1980s, the issue of illegal immigration was subjected to intense public debate. Since then, illegal immigration has been a major contentious issue, especially during election periods, where different parties and presidential candidates take different stands in an attempt to woe voters from either side of the divide. To address illegal immigration, the federal government of the United States has implemented a series of controversial policies and acts (Warner, 2010). One of these Acts is the Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act of 1996 (IIRAIRA). The Act seeks to restrain immigration by penalizing undocumented immigrants and those who stay in the country for statutorily defined periods.  However, illegal immigration in the United States should be accepted, as it increases the size of the country’s economy, enhances economic growth, promotes natives’ welfare, and enhances the country’s tax revenue collection.

            One of the major factors that make the Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act of 1996, which seeks to curb the issue of illegal immigration in the United States, controversial is that the issue is supported and loathed in equal measures. Those opposed to illegal immigration cite issues such as influx in crime rates, stiff competition for locally available jobs, and burdening taxpayers. However, most of those supporting illegal immigration in the county have a scholarly point of view, which suggests that illegal immigration affects the country positively, especially in terms of the economy. The existence of two sides with opposing views towards the topic makes the issue of illegal immigration controversial. Another factor that makes the issue of Illegal immigration in the United States controversial is its connection to terrorism. The September 11 attacks, commonly referred to as 9/11, played a significant role in enhancing controversy on illegal immigration. 19 immigrants, mostly from Saudi Arabia, hijacked multiple airplanes, which they used to carry terror attacks across the country (White, 2019). Government propaganda, especially by the Bush administration, was designed to insight Americans into supporting proposed wars against terrorists and extremist Muslim groups. The effects of 9/11 convinced most Americans to rally against illegal immigration, thus making it controversial in the long run. Another factor that played a critical role in making the issue of illegal immigration in the United States controversial is political propaganda. As indicated earlier, American politicians play a critical role in making the issue a huge topic, especially during elections. In most cases, the leading candidates sponsored by either the Democratic Party or Republican Party holds opposing views regarding the issue, thus enhancing controversy (Alden, 2018). For example, former U.S. President Donald Trump runs his 2017 presidential campaigns on policies against illegal immigration.

However, continuously implementing the Act will affect the United States negatively. This results from the fact that illegal immigration has been proved to affect the country positively via scientific studies. For instance, implementing the Act continuously will reduce the size of the U.S. economy. The U.S economy is considered the largest globally, especially by nominal GDP and net wealth. However, a significant size of this economy is built by illegal immigrants. One of the major reasons illegal immigrants contribute positively to the economy is that most of them engage in income-generating economic activities in the United States (Warner, 2010). The fact that most illegal immigrants are of working age means that most of them enter the country searching for jobs. Most of them seek employment while others engage in entrepreneurship, thus contributing positively to the U.S economy by paying taxes and increasing its gross domestic product. However, this is expected to halt in case the Act is continuously implemented. Moreover, implementing the Act continuously will affect some industries negatively, which depends on immigrants for labor. Notably, a belief by most Americans opposed to illegal immigration that immigrants compete with citizens for available jobs has been proven as a fallacy. This is because most immigrants prefer low-paying unpopular jobs that do not require a high education level, which most natives are unwilling to take. This has made some agriculture industries, especially in states neighboring Mexico, rely on illegal immigrants for labor. However, implementing the Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act of 1996 continuously means that such industry would likely fall due to labor shortages (Portes, 2019).  On the other hand, discontinuing the policy against illegal immigrants would affect the country positively, as immigrants would be allowed to access higher-paying job opportunities, thus contributing positively to the economy. Moreover, halting the Act would positively affect the country’s culture. This is because illegal immigrants are credited for exporting various cultural practices and beliefs from native countries, some of which positively affect the U.S when integrated into the local culture. Such cultures include discipline, saving, and investment.

Various techniques can be used to reduce the controversy and political influence of the illegal immigration issue to allow continuous implementation. One of these plans is to educate the masses on the effects and advantages of illegal immigration. One of the major factors enhancing controversy on the issue of illegal immigration is the fact that most Americans do not understand the true impact of the issue. However, most Americans analyze the issue of illegal immigration from an ignorant point of view, thus making it controversial in the long (White, 2019). To implement this, the relevant authorities and stakeholders, both at the federal and state level, would be required to educate citizens on the issue. Some of the major topics to be covered are the impact of illegal immigration on crime rates in the U.S., the impact of immigration on the economy, and the social aspect of illegal immigrants. Moreover, the education should be supplemented with statistical data to enhance accuracy.

Moreover, continuing implementation of the Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act is expected to enhance crime rates in the United States, which would further threaten the community’s safety in the long run. According to statistics, illegal immigrants are less likely to commit crimes than their native counterparts. According to research, there is no correlation between the increase in violent crimes and illegal immigration.  This is in contrast with the popular belief, especially among those opposed to illegal immigration, that illegal immigrants are responsible for high crime rates in the country. However, implementing the Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act would enhance crime rates in the country. Foremost, implementing the policy means that most illegal immigrants would not access job opportunities and other aids programs due to strict laws (Sulkowski & Wolf, 2020). The ripple effect of the move increases the rate of crime, as most immigrants would turn to crime for survival. Moreover, implementing the Act would force illegal immigrants to join gangs to seek protection against being deported for being in the country illegally. This would increase crime rates, further threatening the safety of the community in the long run.

In conclusion, illegal immigration in the United States should be accepted, as it increases the size of the country’s economy, enhances economic growth, promotes natives’ welfare, and enhances the country’s tax revenue collection. The Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act of 1996 is one of the major government policies designed to address the issue of illegal immigration in the country. However, the government should consider educating the masses to make the issue less controversial.
