Essay must be no less than 1000 words, and should be no more than 1250 words.

• Document your sources.  For purposes of this course, it’s not important that you use a specific documentation style.  Use whichever style with which you are comfortable/have learned.
  • Use internal citation like this: (Smith 2008 p. 42) when you are quoting or citing someone other than the author/filmmaker.  If you are quoting film dialogue or a novel/short story passage, cite only the page number like this: (p. 147) or by paragraph for an online source: (par. 14).
  • In your Works Cited or References section at the end of your essay, make sure to include all the information your documentation style requires.  If you’re not sure which style to use, I recommend MLA (Links to an external site.) (lots of English teachers like that style) or APA (Links to an external site.) (the style I use in my scholarly writing).

  • For the essay project, you will be writing a critical analysis—the writing that literary scholars do when the publish scholarly articles about literature.  Your essay will be about 1/10 or so the length of what literary scholar write.  That means you have to be REALLY focused about your topic.

    In a critical analysis writers use a methodology that assists them in illuminating one of the unit narratives.  There are many critical approaches to use.  If you have studied critical approaches to literature, feel free to choose an approach that works best for you.  If you are not familiar with literary critical approaches, I suggest you use popular culture (Links to an external site.) theory (the critical approach I use for this course).  For purposes of this project, we’ll define popular culture as follows:
