Perfessor instruction: During this course you have experienced and discussed a variety of approaches to teaching art, completed activities focusing on art making and looking at and talking about art, and explored ways of assessing and evaluating student art and your own teaching. Use these experiences to develop your own philosophy of art education. Sometimes it helps to think of your philosophy as an explanation you would give parents for why art is important in the early childhood curriculum and why you teach art the way you do. Look over our discussions – all of them are still available to you – and think about the learning experiences you have had this semester. What theories and approaches did you find helpful? What will you teach children about art? How will you teach art? How will you balance creative self-expression (child-centered lessons) with the need to teach basic skills (teacher-directed lessons)?
