Writing assignment 1

This assignment is designed to help you become more proficient in summarizing others and responding to their ideas. SRRs require students to engage with readings from class in a structured—yet fluid—fashion. The ability to articulate what others argue and what you believe is essential for college writing, critical thinking, and civic engagement. Toward this end, your task for this assignment is to write a 350-500-word Summary/Response/Reflection discussion board post, “triggered” for the assigned reading selection. (Do not attempt to respond to ALL of the points made in the reading selection.)

Summary

In the first paragraph you must summarize the essay and make mention of the specific point to which you will respond (your trigger). Your summary will likely lead nicely into a mention of your trigger, which will likely lead nicely into your thesis statement, which should clearly articulate your specific response.

Response

The second paragraph of your discussion board post will consist of your response to what you have read. You will use evidence from your personal experience (or experience with which you’re especially familiar), as well as the author’s work.

Reflection

The final paragraph will consist of your reflection on the reading selection. You will reflect on the reading by connecting it to the class, other readings, prior experiences, and/or raising questions.  How will the information in the article be beneficial to the research question?

Additional Guidelines

1. Format your essay according to the MLA format (Incorrect MLA format = -10-25 points).

2. If you do quote from the reading selection, do so sparingly. No more than 5% of your SSR should consist of quoted material; when referring to the author’s ideas, paraphrase instead.

3. Give your discussion board post a relevant, attention-grabbing title.

4. Make sure you cite your source.
