Do we have too-highexpectations of lifeof love, work, marriage, friendship, and/or family, forexampleas Tennessee Williams seems to think we do? (In answering the question and in developingyour essay, please choose only three of the above items to focus upon, perhaps one per body paragraph.)
PLEASE READ THE INSTRUCTIONS CAREFULLY
The paper must directly and indirectly quote The GlassMenagerie (1944) and use MLA citation correctly. It must also use theprovided secondary source, Torn between the Real and the Illusion: TennesseeWilliams Protagonists (2016).
Papers must end with the below provided Works Cited page, which lists both the play and the secondary source. Papers must directly citethe secondary source at least once in the body, or they will receivea zero in the Critical Thinking domain
As usual, papers thatplagiarize other written sources or students’ work will receive no credit.
Papers must be atleast two full pages long and no more than three pages long (not counting theWork Cited page, which is the last page of the document).
They must also bedouble-spaced at 12-pitch, using the Times New Roman font. Press the TAB keyonce to indent new paragraphs, and use transitional terms to introduce bodyparagraphs and the conclusion. Use proper, three-part paragraphstructure in the body paragraphs.
The paper does notrequire a title, and it is unnecessary to repeat the essay question at anytime. You must submit an electronic version of the file to Turn It In.
Some advice regarding the introduction:
Remember that the introduction consists of a lead-inthat briefly states the general topic of the essay, a tie-in thatbriefly summarizes the literary works under examination and, if possible, states how their authors would answer the essay question, and a thesisstatement that provides your answer to the essay question. Youcould agree or disagree with the writeror offer a middle-ground answer.
In the tie-in, I would recommend spending no more thantwomaybe threesentences on the play. You could briefly summarize The Glass Menagerie in one or twosentence(s), and then state how Williams would answer the essay question. It is unnecessary to mention the secondarysource in the tie-in. Note the use ofitalics when stating the titles of major works, such as plays. (Underlining is also acceptablebut never bothat the same time.)
For example:
In The Glass Menagerie, by Tennessee Williams, (andthen provide a brief summary of the play). This indicates that Williams (and then provide a brief statement of whatthe play seems to say Williamss attitude toward the idealistic expectations hethinks people sometimes have about life). (You would then follow this up with the thesis statementhow youwould answer the essay question.)
Some advice regarding the body paragraphs:
After you have mentioned the full name of TennesseeWilliams in the introduction, you may refer to him as Williams in the bodyparagraphs. Also, since the play doesnthave a particularly long name, you may use its full title in the bodyparagraphs. However, given that it isthe only literary work under examination in this paper, it is unlikely youllneed to state this title in the body more than oncemaybe twice. When quoting characters in the play, you maydo so much as you would in a short story, making sure to leave out stagedirections and to clarify context for the reader. Only the page number is necessary in the MLAcitation.
For example:
When Tom and Amanda discuss Lauras fixation upon her glasscollection, Tom says, Laura is very different from other girls. Amanda replies, I think the difference isall to her advantage (Williams 1074).
You are required to reference the secondary source(Aldalabeeh) once in a body paragraph. When doing so, you should refer to the full name of the author in theattributive tag of the quotation (the essay title is unnecessary and will belisted on the Works Cited page). If youhappen to quote him a second time, you may refer to him as Aldalabeeh.
For example:
Yousef A.N. Aldalabeeh writes, Williams’ plays shocked theaudience since they present something that has never been presented before(144). Aldalabeeh goes on to say . . .
[Please do not use this quotation in your essay.]
Some advice on using the secondary source:
When choosing a quotation from Aldalabeeh, it is best tochoose something relevant to the point youre trying to make in one of yourbody paragraphsand you will find in the source a wide variety of quotations tochoose from that are related to Williamss attempt to shatter the readersidealistic illusions about life. Youcould choose a comment that speaks generally about Tennessee Williamss work,or you could choose a comment that speaks specifically to The GlassMenagerie, but I would avoid quoting Aldalabeeh when he is discussing otherWilliams plays (A Streetcar Named Desire, for example) since thesecomments will more likely be unrelated to the subject matter of your essay.
Try not to be distracted by Aldalabeehs formatting of pagecitations: he is not using the same system you are asked to use.
On the Works Cited page:
Please make what follows on the next page the final page ofyour essay: the Works Cited page. Notethat it does not count in the papers page total.
