Annotated bibilography

1) Summarize:

A summary highlights the main points of the article’s purpose. It provides an overview of what the article is about without getting too specific. Consider these questions to help you write your summaries:

    • What is the point of this book or article?
    • What topics are covered?
    • If someone asked what this article/book is about, what would you say? 
    • In addition, indicate which LRC database you used to find the source (e.g., Ebscohost, PubMed, Academic Search Elite, etc.).
• The length of your sources will determine how detailed your summary is.
• Use your own words only. No quotations.

2) Assess:

After summarizing a source, then evaluate it not only in terms of its credibility, but in terms of how it might fit into your essay.

Consider responding the following questions in a few sentences (2-3):

• • Is it a useful source to help make your point?
  • How does it compare with other sources in your bibliography?
  • Is the information reliable?
  • Is this source biased or objective?
  • What is the goal of this source?

Review the to help with this part, but you do not need to address everything it.

3) Reflect:

Once you’ve summarized and assessed a source, you’ll want to reflect on how it fits into your research. These are some questions to address:

• • Was this source helpful to you in understanding the topic or issues?
  • How does it help you shape your argument?
  • How can you use this source in your research project?
  • Has it changed how you think about your topic?

In this last part of the annotation, you may also want to discuss how you think this source would be used to persuade your target audience.

• • Would they find it believable and credible based on what their knowledge and values?

Even if you think the source won’t fit well into your argument, you can still put it on your bibliography since the idea is to create a list of everything you’ve looked at so far.
