Research Question:

• Purpose: 

• we should examine how social structure impacts people’s life in reaction to the current pandemic

• Take an intersectional approach to examine how Race, Gender, and Class (choose two out of three) intersect with the current crisis, shaping people’s life chances?

• In other words, the research paper should focus on one specific intersection that created disadvantage (we need to focus on one intersectional approach and focus deeply on that )

• We need to use at least 4 news articles

• They need to contain plenty of data (these data may not be always presented in race, class, gender but they might use words such as male, female, transgeder community, black groups, working class)

• The data needs to be related to one of the variable selected

• The data will be the backbone of your paper, you will use it to develop an argument

• Data collection:

• you may use more than 4 news articles:

• similar data (class race or gender)

• It quotes different source

• It use different type of evidence

• Group the data by variable not source (group the articles based on either gender, class, or race)

• Analysis:

• Code (group) it 

• Look for patterns

• An analysis is not a description

• think about structure/agency; culture/ material; micro/macro relationships

• USE 2 academic paper ( peer review journal articles) to further expand the analysis

• EX: one article of mental health based on class and one article of black community

• use this two articles to relate class and race 

• than use newspaper articles to back up this main arguments and expend it related with covid-19

• Writing:

• Introduction: 

• clearly states the aim of the paper (what, why, how)

• How question should answer how class, race and gender (two of these three) collide with pandemic and shape people’s life

• Body: 

• Include data, codes–groups–,and incorporate the academic papers.

• We need data from the news articles

• Conclusion: 

• what do you learn out of this research paper

• does not want restatement of the paper but discuss what have we found

• Grading rubric:
