Hello Class,
Examine some key reasons why people might seem attracted to pseudoscientific claims.
The reason, why some people might be attracted to pseudoscientific claims, is because of their own biases and because they arent looking to where most of the evidence is pointed.
Describe at least two claims that you have heard people make and analyze the main reason why such claims do, or do not meet rigorous scientific methodology standards.
One of the oddest things that Ive ever heard came from a neighbor of mine, she bit the head of a firefly because someone told her that if she wanted a new outfit for Easter Sunday that is what she should do. She went on to tell me that someone that she knew did it last year and that person got a new suit for Easter. There was no way that I could disprove what she was telling me because I was not going to bite the head of the bug.
Another claim that I heard was that if a woman brought her husband a new pair of shoes he would use that same pair of shoes to walk out on their relationship. So men if your wife has never brought you shoes this might be the reason. How do you disprove something like that when relationships are broken every day for any number of reasons, but Im told by my female friends that they have heard the same thing and that they dont buy men’s shoes just for that reason. Neither of these claims would meet the rigors of the scientific methodology standard.
The material discussed this week has made me understand that there are sometimes biases attached to explanations to a claim and the material brought to light that if a claim cant be verified by recreating the claim to get the same results, if the results arent the same the claim is probably flawed
