Thesis: In Senator John Lewis’ 2019 commencement address to college graduates of the City College of New York, he effectively convinces an audience of diverse millennials to “get into trouble” (Lewis). Lewis deploys key rhetorical strategies— his credibility as a civil rights leader, his emotive narrative of oppression, and his fact-based political reasoning— to mobilize students to turn history in their favor. 

2. Topic Sentence 1: Early in his speech, Lewis establishes his credibility as a rhetorician by recounting his track history as a public servant in the ongoing battle for human rights.

By appealing to the millennial audience’s sense of empathy, justice, and common sense—Lewis underwrites their already brewing beliefs. Lewis’ ethical image made him a formidable voice before what many consider to be a turbulent generation. Not only did Lewis’ rhetoric fit the audience, it also fit the times. The effectiveness of the speech, then, rests in its kairos affect. It was said, arguably, at the right time, to the right people, by the right man. As such, it is a speech that has mainstreamed his slogan, “get in good trouble” (Lewis).
