I have also provided a link to the film in our library database. If you would like to watch the film with a transcript, which can be helpful, use the link.
STEP TWO: COMPLETE THE WRITING ASSIGNMENT
For the second part of the assignment, you will complete a second short reading and then answer questions. The questions are below. Submit your answers in the Focus Writing Assignment #1 within the Module.
IMPORTANT ADVICE: When you answer questions from the reading and the video, it is essential that you DO NOT simply copy what the reading states or simply repeat the narrative of the film- it is important than you demonstrate your understanding of the sources. You will include specific examples and perhaps even quotes directly from the sources, but, also, always explain those quotes and those examples in your own language. If you simply copy the transcript, there will be a serious point deduction.
To answer these questions, use both the readings and the video
QUESTION ONE: Evaluate the Causes of Bacons Rebellion
- The reading states, Although Bacon had little in common with Virginia’s freemen, he shared with them a feeling that an inside group was reaping rewards at the expense of others.
- Write at least one paragraph that explains the political and economic reasons for the lower classes of Virginia, the former and current indentured servants, to rebel against the colonial government.
- Write at least one paragraph that answers the following: Do you agree that the lower classes had legitimate reasons to rebel against their government? Of their reasons, which of these issues do you think are still relevant (if any) in today’s society? In other words, are some of the complaints of the lower classes in the 1670s similar to complaints that lower income people might have today? Explain your answers.
QUESTION TWO: Evaluate the significance of Bacon’s Rebellion
- Write at least one paragraph that answers the following:
- How and why did Bacons Rebellion contribute to the increase of slavery in Virginia?
- How did Bacons Rebellion teach the upper classes in Virginia that it is important to keep poor whites and black slaves in their place? What are your thoughts about this tactic?
QUESTION THREE: EVALUATE The Stono Rebellion and Fort Mose- Freedom Fighters
At the end of the documentary, the historians say the following:
Peter Wood: The crushing of the Stono Rebellion was a tragedy. To me, these people were freedom fighters. Someone like Jemmy, newly arrived from Angola, is able to show others around him that this is not the only way to live, this can change — it may not change this time but it will change in the future.
Jim Horton: Under the most inhumane conditions that you can possibly imagine, people were able to maintain their human dignity. It gives you some insight into the resilience of the human spirit. That it is possible for human beings to make the decision: I will not be defeated.
Read a bit more about the Stono Rebellion and Fort Mose in the attached document.
For this question, use BOTH the reading and the documentary as your sources. Your answer to this question should be at least two paragraphs:
- How was the system of slavery different in South Carolina? Explain your answer.
- What is Fort Mose? How did Fort Mose play a role in the Stono Rebellion and why might the English want to stifle any information about Fort Mose?
- How and why are the men and women of the Stono Rebellion freedom fighters and how does that differentiate them from runaways? What is the significance and impact of the Stono Rebellion?
