Concert Paper
- Attend a live classical or art music concert. Hold on to the concert program and ticket and turn those in with your paper. Submit these as a separate PDF or JPG
EDIT UPDATE: The concert paper IS still required. If you manage to attend an in-person concert, great!
If you didn’t get to attend a concert, here are some options:
An opera!! This is a LONG, but really worthwhile opportunity. The Met is broadcasting an opera every night while our country is in this predicament. Read the synopsis before you watch, and take notes as you watch. I want to hear your commentary on the music as well as the story and action. Be sure to mention things like recitative and arias that we have discussed in class.
Another option is to access some full-length symphonic concerts on YouTube. BBC PROMS is always a good option.
There are likely other livestreamed and recorded concert opportunities that you might hear about. If you have a question if one is valid, just ask.

- Take notes about your concert experience:
- Describe the "who, what, when, and where" of the concert. You will want to describe and include each piece and each movement of a piece in your description.
- Analyze what was outstanding about each piece. Compare the pieces to one another. Compare the pieces to works heard in class. Use terms from class, but feel free to provide your own descriptions.
- Interpret the music. Is there meaning in the music? What is it expressing? What is the time period? Country? Composer? Is it still relevant today?
- Write about your likes and dislikes about the music and the performance. Explain your judgments.
- Include anything else that might be interesting or important!
- Type a minimum 2 full page paper. Feel free to go longer! Double spaced. 12-point font. Do not triple-space or quadruple-space between paragraphs. Include name and section meeting time in the upper right hand corner.
- You may use program notes, but do not allow them to "write" your paper for you. If you do need to quote the program notes, please use quotation marks and provide a citation.
- Proofread!!! Correct grammar, punctuation, capitalization and word usage are parts of a well written paper. It is suggested to complete your written paper shortly after you attend your concert, so the information is still fresh!
