Prompt 1:
Global Metal showed us how countries around the world have adopted metal music and transformed it based on their cultural needs, which has led to subsequent identity formations. The Founding Indian Fathers discussed how American identity does not consider the influence of Native Americans on our political system. In what ways do you think identity plays a role in politics and power? Do you think the identities of those in power have an effect on national identity? Can you think of any examples?
Prompt 2:
Every culture in the world has their own set of both religious and secular rituals. Because of this, rituals are considered one of the few human cultural universals. Reflect on your own life; what kind of rituals do you partake in on a daily basis, a weekly basis, a monthly basis, and an annual basis? Are these rituals practiced by most of society? Do you perform some rituals for personal reasons?

Now I come to think of it, I have a few non-religious rituals that I partake in both on a daily basis and an annual basis. On a daily basis, I sometimes say grace before I eat. It is a totally secular ritual and it is like an Asian thing that I do before eating a meal. I can only assume that this ritual was created long time ago when people were underfed and starved. An annual rituals I do every year are celebration of birthdays, memorial service for ancestors, new year, and holidays. Like many others, I celebrate both my own birthday and my friend’s and family’s to strengthen the relationships. Often I cook and give out presents to celebrate birthdays and eat cake on every birthdays.
On the date of my country’s holiday, all generation from one family gathers in place(usually in the oldest son’s or daughters or even grandparent’s) and make the foods for the dead ancestors. We prepare the food in front of the dead ancestor’s portraits or shrine and bow down a few times and drink a cup of alcohol. After the celebration, families gather again to eat and drink. I believe this ritual began to memorize the dead ancestors and to feed them while they travel as a ghost. In modern days, the celebration became more simple and quicker and not many people celebrate the holiday anymore because of religion(often Christianity) and inconvenience.
Other than the memorial day of ancestors, I believe many people celebrate birthdays, new year, and holidays nationally. I do not think that I have unique rituals that I do for personal reasons, but I do most of the secular rituals that many other people do; I celebrate birthdays, holidays, and new year.
