Critical Literacy and Language Education: For this assignment, you must choose a topic related to or arising from the themes of course study—critical literacy and language diversity and revitalization—on which to pursue more in-depth research and writing. The research essay should be no less than 3000 words and no more than 3500 words, excluding references. This essay should demonstrate careful use of both relevant course materials and additional materials gathered from your research.
Your research essay should include the following parts:
Title page;
Abstract—a short half-page (150 words) summary of your paper in which you succinctly explain your main objectives and conclusions;
Introduction—an overview of the topic as you will present it in the paper and a rationale for your choice, based on its relevance to course themes and its significance in your context and / or more broadly;
Research Question(s)—the central question or questions you will address in your writing;
Background/Literature Review—provide detailed information on your topic to demonstrate that you are aware of some of the recent research related to it;
Body—divided into various sections appropriate to your topic in which you develop your ideas;
Conclusion—a reiteration of the main question(s), and a summary comment about your research and its implications for language and literacy education;
Further Reading—a minimum of six sources you did not cite, but which you feel are useful to educators interested in the topic of your research; and,
References—a list of the sources cited in your writing.
