ARGUMENT ESSAY

Motivate your reader right away by creating an engaging opening sentence or paragraph. (You can use an example, anecdote, or scene that sets up your thesis, or some other method. Just dont start with some clichd, bland statement that begins In todays society… or Nowadays…)Then, inform readers of the background or context they will need to be prepared for your thesis. You might include a definition of a key term or a statistic, or you could summarize what has been happening with this issue or what people have been saying about it. Then, state your thesis, using the wording we worked on in your conference, putting your ideas into the magical thesis machine format.Assert claim #1, which should be an arguable statement that mirrors the although portion of your thesis. Now, bring in a guest speaker a quotation from a source to support your claim. Be sure to use the citation triangle, with a signal phrase to introduce the person who is about to speak, then the quotation, then an in-text citation that points the reader to the source as it is listed alphabetically on your works cited page. The citation should contain the last name of the author and the page number where you found the quote. But make sure your citation matches the firstpiece of information for the source, as some sources will not be listed by author. Then, connect the quotation to your claim by clarifying what the quote says, commenting on specific wording, and explaining how the quote supports your claim. At this point, you could do one of three things: 1) end the paragraph; 2) bring in more support for your claim(either in the form of another quote from a source or an example you have found or observed) and then connect this quote/example to your claim, or 3) add one more sentence to connect this paragraph to your overall thesis. Assert claim #2, which should mirror the next chunk of your thesis. To guide your reader through your line of argument, you might need to start your second claim with a transition. If your thesis used the magical thesis machine format, the second chunk of your thesis will contrast with the first, since although creates a relationship of contrast. A good transition word to start your second body paragraph, then, would be However, since that shows the reader you are moving into a new stage of your argument that contrasts with what you said in your first body paragraph. After your claim, go on with the other parts of the ABC cycle by bringing in a source or example and connecting it through your own logical explanations and reasoning. Remember, you have the option of adding another B and C to bring in another example/source and connect it to your claim. Assert claim #3, which should mirror the third chunk of your thesis. By stating your claim in a precise way at the beginning of each paragraph, you create a clear line of argument for your reader to follow throughout the essay. (Your reader will need reminders of where the argument is going, especially at this point in the essay since the reader hasnt seen your thesis since the first paragraph.)  Bring in a source example (remember to use a signal phrase and in-text citation). Connect the source or example to your claim. Connect this paragraph to your thesis. Add another B and C, if necessary. Assert claim #4, if you have one. (The number of claims will be determined by how complex your thesis is and how you break it down. Unlike in the old five-paragraph-essay 

Couch3format, there is no set number of body paragraphs.) Add B and C, as necessary, to bring in support for your claim and connect everything together. Write a conclusion that leaves the reader thinking about your one provocative thought. Dont just restate your thesis in exactly the same words, but summarize your argument for your reader. Sometimes, it works to return to the example, anecdote, or scene you described in your introduction. If you do that, you could explain or analyze or extend the example/story in light of what you just argued. Another good ending technique is to save a quote from one of your sources that helps clinch your argument. A third possibility is to look to the future. If what you have been arguing is true, what are the implications for the future? (Just be careful not to introduce any new arguable claims here.) NOTE: Your essay will be longer than this. It should be at least 1,000 words, which should take up about four full pages.

Empathy has been a decline in college students around the world ; therefore, it is important for many to understand how it affects the people we dont care to think about.

 

 

Although some people have trouble allowing themselves to connect with others, if we dont experience or express empathy, we can come across as uncaring and end up feeling isolated and frustrated, which can lead to stress and even depression. Therefore, we should open ourselves up to share peace, love, and positive vibes
