For our last form of “literacy” we’ll examine in this course, we’ll remain under the umbrella of text, but we’re going to focus on the academic press. Academia is a curious culture. To many, much of what academics do and write about seems so specific that it isn’t relevant to the broader problems we encounter in everyday life. And yet, here we are engaging in academic thinking, reading, and writing, because on some level we highly value a higher education, whether it’s because it makes us smarter, gets us a job, or enriches our quality of life in some way. So, since we’re already here, it would be a shame to ignore academia’s top thinkers and writers in popular music.
What do I mean by ‘academic press’? In order to have an article published in a well-respected academic journal, it must go through a rigorous process called peer-review. What this means is that a group of people in the same field read a manuscript and decide whether or not it meets their high standards for publication. Peer-reviewers consider many different aspects, of course they care about the quality of writing, but they pay particular attention to how the article was researched and how the argument is put forth and substantiated.
For this assignment you are going to select an article from one of the following journals:
Popular Music
Journal of Popular Music Studies
Popular Music and Society
Popular Music History
The Journal of Hip Hop Studies
Dancecult ()
And there are more great journals than those listed above. If you find an article that you would like review that is not from one of these journals, please let me know so that I can approve it.
Find/select a research article to review. Most research articles will be between 6,000-10,000 words.
Here is an example:
NOTE: You CANNOT use an editorial, introduction article, or review article. These are typically short articles ranging anywhere from 1 to 4 pages.
The Assignment:
1. Provide a reference for the article that contains the following information. Author Name, Article Title Name, Journal Name, Year of Publication, Journal Information (volume, pages). You are welcome to use any standard citation style.
for example: Bell, A.P. (2020). Silent shredding. The Journal of Air Guitar, 32(1): 4-89.
2. Write approximately words divided into three sections: (1) summary, (2) analysis, and (3) verdict. The verdict should only be a few sentences.
Summary: Provide a synopsis (summary) of the article. What are the major points forwarded by the author and how do they substantiate them? Try to read the article as if the author is a lawyer making an argument in court. Consider what the arguments are, and how they are evidenced, if at all.
Analysis: To extend the court analogy, you are the judge. Does the author make a compelling case? If so, why? If not, why? Consider the evidence provided by the author to support their perspective.
Verdict: What is the single most important thing you’ll remember from reading this article? End your review with a “save it” or skip it”. I want to know if the article you chose is worth reading or not.
Grading Criteria:
Summary – 10 points (5 = Excellent; 4 = Very Good; 3 = Passable; 2-0 = Poor, points given depending on the number of errors) x 2
Analysis – 10 points (5 = Excellent; 4 = Very Good; 3 = Passable; 2-0 = Poor, points given depending on the number of errors) x 2
Style – 5 points (5 = Excellent; 4 = Very Good; 3 = Passable; 2-0 = Poor, points given depending on the number of errors)
Note 1: part marks (i.e., 4.5) are possible.
Note 2: for the style mark, if you receive less than 5/5 it is because errors were detected. Here are some example scenarios:
4.5 – one obvious spelling or grammatical error. An almost perfectly-written document. By the University’s standards, it’s ‘Excellent’ but not quite ‘Outstanding’
4 – a few (<3) obvious errors or problems, but an otherwise well-written document
3 – more than 3 obvious errors or problems, but it’s at least a readable document
2.5 or less – there are serious issues related to style in the document that need attention
Note 3: if you make the same error twice it will only count as one error. For example, if you are consistently misspelling a word, it will count as only one error.
