You will compose a final paper about a current social issue of your choice
You will compose a final paper about a current social issue of your choice. The issue must be current, and must fit the criteria of a public issue according to the Sociological Imagination by Mills. You may use the same issue you chose for the discussion or the 6 point paper last MOD if you’d like.
The paper will be 2100-2500 words in length, not including the cover page, title, your name, etc., and not including the works cited page.
You will examine your issue using the sociological imagination by exploring the four components. Define your topic as a public issue (as explained in the lectures in the MILLS mod), and discuss the recent events (recent history) such as aspects of policy change, law change, a shift in society, etc.- being careful not to make this section a history lesson about your topic, but to explore it in the way Mills meant it to be considered. You should discuss the aspects of biography that appear to make a person more likely to be involved in the issue, and also consider the troubles that lead the issue and the troubles that caused by it as well.
You should discuss the sociological imagination in your paper, you should quote Mills, and you should include Mills in your works cited page. YOU MUST USE MILLS THROUGHOUT YOUR PAPER.
Info for citing the Mills reading:
Mills, C. Wright. The Sociological Imagination. Oxford University Press. 1959
In addition, you will need to find 3 other ***academic journal articles or other ***ACADEMIC sources (such as current text books, text-type anthologies, etc). You will annotate these sources in another assignment, but must also list these sources and the Mills reading in a regular works cited page at the end which will not include your annotations.
***A scholarly journal article is one written by professionals/experts in a field, typically those holding a Ph.D, but occasionally a Master’s.
The article would NOT be published in a magazine you could purchase at the news stand or grocery store. It would not appear on Wikkipedia, a blog, a popular news paper or news publication, a special interest site (such as Planned Parenthood, a church/religious organization site, WebMD, etc.), youtube, a documentary film, a fictional film, an article linked in a facebook/social media post, a news site, etc. These journals are peer reviewed.
Examples of scholarly journals are those journals put out by the American Sociology Association, law reviews, psychology journals, etc., NOT school/college publications or things like Junior Scholastic meant for school aged children/high school students.
