The election of 1932

Here is my thesis:

 
“When most people think of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt, they think of his famous speech, stating, The only thing we have to fear, is fear itself.  Or maybe they remember that he was the President during World War II and spoke of, A day which will live in infamy.  Even further, perhaps they remember that he was elected to office four times.  But what they may not remember, is how overwhelmingly he won those elections.  A key example of this is the election of 1932.  The country had been going through a great depression, and current President Hoover was not doing enough to change the direction of the economy.  While he maintained his insistence that the government should keep itself out of American lives and that American citizens should help themselves, Roosevelt proposed an alternative plan.  One that included government programs focused on providing jobs to Americans.  While Roosevelt is running on a platform of a New Deal (perhaps taking a page from his cousin Theodores, Square Deal book) Hoover is maintaining that what he is doing is working, even going so far as trying to deport non-citizens to allow more American citizens to obtain jobs.

President Hoover and his opponent, Roosevelt, had two completely different ideals on jobs in America.  Hoover was more interested in taking jobs from immigrants to give to citizens, while Roosevelt wanted to create more jobs for everyone.  But what were the other ideals they both ran on?  What other topics were debated on the road to the election of 1932?  Roosevelts overwhelming victory has been well documented, but I want to explore the other topics of the election that may have been overlooked.  What other plans did Roosevelt have to get America out of the depression?  Was this more a Roosevelt victory, or a Hoover loss?  What did Americans say after they voted, and how long did it take them to put their full belief in Roosevelt?  We all have lofty ideals when we elect a new President, but how long was it until they fully believed he was following through with his promises?  This is what I want to explore in my research paper.  A complete run-down of the topics that were talked about in the campaign, if they were followed through with, and why Americans felt so confident in overwhelmingly voting for Roosevelt. 

Finally, I want to try to explore the faith Americans had in Roosevelt and how it may have wavered over his presidency.  We know he overwhelmingly won the office in 1932, but how did he manage to be elected 3 other times.  This is important to see how American political minds think.  We are stuck in a period of presidents who serve one-or-two terms, and then the opposite party is elected to office.  What did Roosevelt do to avoid that?  Why dont we have party dynasties now?  I am hoping that digging into his campaign ideals, specifically in 1932, will help answer these questions, as well as others related to the topic.
