It is a two part discussion. Both prompts A and B must be completed. Instructions as follows:

PROMPT A: 
During local and national elections candidates run television and radio ads that seem increasingly more negative. We are assured that the negative ads work. Something has happened to political discourse in America and we see it not only during elections but in the unending polarization (gridlock) of our congress.  Using the perspective you have gained after this week’s readings and video clips, please answer the following questions:
  • What has happened to political discourse in the United States and why?
  • Provide an example of the kind of discourse you dislike/like (you may use your readings as an example)
  • What changed to make things worse (or better)?
  • Do you think this kind of discourse has implications for how you communicate at work, school, and/or social gatherings? How so?
  • What three things would you do to change (improve) political discourse?
PROMPT B:
Think of all the readings for this week and the figures that wrote the various selections. Imagine that they are your contemporaries living today (if they are no longer living). Now imagine that they have decided to run for office and you have been selected to create a political campaign sign (PowerPoint or Word Doc) for one of the candidates. Select the candidate you want to help (from Orwell to Carter) and create a catchy campaign sign. The slogan should tell potential voters something real about the person you selected. Note: if you choose Lincoln you cannot use one of his old campaign slogans. Everything must spring from your imagination and what you know about these thinkers from the readings. (Hint: the topics for this week may help you). Note: Don’t forget to create a catchy campaign sign.
