FINAL EXAM PART 2 (worth 50 points)
REMEMBER TO INDICATE WHICH QUESTION OPTION YOU ARE ANSWERING!
Please remember: An essay is a group of paragraphs composed of sentences with internal consistency and flow, all written in the same verb tense. An essay includes 1) an introductory paragraph providing a thesis statement or proposal, 2) a central portion typically, three paragraphs, providing three lines of argument or examples to support the thesis statement, and 3) finally a summary/concluding paragraph.
Laundry lists of numbered points are NOT acceptable.
ASSIGNMENT: Drawing from cultures in your textbook Culture Sketches or from other cultures we have covered in class through lessons or films, or from recent news items related to displaced people, the climate crisis, the COVID-19 pandemic, and post-colonial perspectives, write a two to three (2 to 3) page essay on one of the two topics below:
option one:
The first question is similar to the first essay you wrote in this class, except you now have all the cultures we have covered to use in your comparison. DO NOT submit the same essay that you did for the Section One assignment. Remember to select two culturesthat are geographically spaced far apart to draw the best comparison.
QUESTION: A) Compare the impact of colonialism on nations in two different regions of the world. In which region or nation have indigenous or “tribal” groups been more successful (in terms of surviving and maintaining their traditional ways of life? B) Use at least one aspect of their culture (i.e. politics, economics, education, storytelling, governance, subsistence strategies, religion, gender roles, rites of passage, healthcare, trade relations, relationship to the land and their environments) to illustrate how the indigenous groups have to held on to their traditions; then C) Conclude by discussing what colonial factors (e.g. local history, neocolonialism, religion hegemony, resource availability, length of conflict or domination, economics, and characteristics of the outside interests) may have affected the relative successes and failures for each of these groups.
option two:
Anthropologists are beginning to rethink how we view "Colonialism" and more modern-day "Globalism." We recognize that our species has reached a tipping point and the only constant is change. In this course you’ve been exposed to a number of concepts, including Sustainability, Resilience, Colonialism, Globalism, while learning about the cultures of Indigenous people, Displaced Refugees, and a number of traditional cultures around the world. Through news debriefings we’ve learned that the COVID-19 pandemic is affecting everyone in the world, and that the Black Lives Mattermovement and demonstrations for several other other key social issuesis spreading around the world too, in part due to the awakening through social media. In the final lesson on the Anthropocene, I tried to make the case that, at a time when there are more people on the move than ever before in the history of our species, ALL refugees are in part Climate Refugees. Along the way we’ve learned there are inequalities related to how people are impacted by the globalimpacts of colonialism, a pandemic, and deeply seeded institutional discrimination and structural inequalities.
QUESTION: A) Compare two cultures from different regions of the worldand discuss the ways their traditional lifestyles have become threatened due to the forces of modern-day Globalism. B) Discuss how the current climate crisis and other global forces are impacting each of these culture’s traditional homelands, their lifestyles, and their traditional ways of making a living? C) Conclude by discussing what the future may bring to each of these two cultures, based on what you understand about the climate crisisand about globalism in the world today.
