Gender and Society Final Paper SYD3800
In this paper of at least 1,200 words, you will do an application of the concepts of masculinities and femininities that the authors present in chapters 6 and 7. You will apply their theories and concepts to either 1) One or two fictional Hollywood movies that you find to be interesting commentaries on gender dynamics, 2) two recent articles from newspapers or magazines that analyze some aspect of current gender dynamics, or 3) two brief interviews you have done with people you know in which you ask them about hierarchies of masculinities and femininities, gender inequalities, sexism, and feminism.
In your analysis of the meaning of the movie(s), the articles, or the way your interview subjects think about gender, you must use the concepts of hegemonic masculinity and subordinated masculinities, emphasized femininity and pariah femininities, sexism, androcentrism, and subordination, feminism, and patriarchal bargains. You must also refer to other concepts in the textbook when relevant to support your analysis. You must demonstrate that you understand the arguments made by the authors of our textbook even if you disagree with them.
It may be easier if you choose movies made from a feminist perspective, articles are written from a feminist perspective, or interview people who have a feminist perspective, but you do not have to. But you do need to suggest how you think the textbook authors would analyze these movies, articles or how they would analyze your interview subjects constructions of gender and power in their minds. (See their discussion of feminism on pages 184 through 187.
if you choose to interview people, there are no set questions you have to ask, but they should include some along the lines of what are the different types of masculinities in society, and which ones do you think are most valued and why? What are the different types of femininities in our society, which ones are most valued and why? Do you believe there are gender inequalities in our society? and How would you define feminism, and do you and to what extent do you consider yourself part of/ in favor of the feminist movement?
No outside research is needed for this paper. This is an application of the course material to specific texts: movies, news articles, or what ordinary people have to say about gender. The only book you need to cite in the text. If you are analyzing a movie, critically assess how the movie is about gender dynamics. What are its themes? Do you think the filmmaker(s) is endorsing certain views on gender and society?
If you are analyzing a newspaper or magazine article, dont choose one thats just reporting but one that is analyzing gender in our society, for example analyzing a recent trend or controversy. Based on what we have learned this semester, do you think the authors do a good job analyzing gender? Why or why not? (The answer can be a little bit of both of course, so when do they analyze it well but when does their analysis fall short?)
