The purpose of a visual analysis essay is to carefully examine and sometimes evaluate a movie, t.v show or a piece of art. As with any analysis, this requires you to break the subject down into its component parts.
Visual analysis essays concentrate on how the movie or t.v. show was written for example how certain themes present themselves in the story. This allows you to present the features of the movie in way that maybe the audience didnt see. In doing so, you will need to present some type of argument, or claim, about what you are analyzing.
Once you read the module 3 required chapters, it will become clear as to how you should write your essay. Remember, it will be very difficult to write this essay without reading both of the required chapters. While the chapter does focus on analysing a piece of literature, the authors have done an excellent job of breaking down the components of an analysis that can be used to analyze a show.
Hint: A good way to structure the thesis statement in your analysis essay is to prove what something in the movie means. (For example: James Mason, the director of the movie, Eternal Rest, used the color red to foreshadow death throughout the movie.) This gives the audience an indication that you are going to point out and analyze all of the different ways the movie utilized this particular feature. You should also indicate whether or not the use of this feature was successful or not and why.
Again, once you read the chapters, it will make sense to you.
