Background
Lag time is one of the limitations of surveillance systems that are traditionally used for detection of disease. Syndromic surveillance systems can detect disease but it is not in real time. Evidence exists in the literature that the advent of sophisticated information systems may be able to help communicate information to public health professionals as well as to the general public during and after previous epidemics.
