Genre Analysis
For the last several weeks, you have examined three research articles (from three different disciplines or from three of the same discipline articles you have chosen) for instances of the scholarly features we have discussed in class (e.g., citation, modality, meta-discourse, etc.). You then recorded these features in a chart (this is your data) along with any questions and observations. Choose one feature (two at the most) as the focus of your genre analysis. Drawing on your data, compare its appearance, location, nature, and function across the disciplines that comprise your research site. Your audience, as always, is your instructor and members of this discipline (Writing & Rhetoric), and, for this assignment, the student writer.
In evaluating your work, I will be paying particular attention to the following:
o IMRD headings: Introduction, Method, Results, Discussion (& Conclusion) IMPORTANT!!
o Use of citation and modality to map out the Existing Knowledge and Knowledge-Deficit.
o Meta-discourse to draw a road-map for the audience (to forecast, summarize, and emphasize, where appropriate)
o Reporting expressions attributing statements to other writers.
o Topic reiteration to guide and remind the audience.
o Use of apposition to negotiate the territory between reader and writer.
o Use of modality to limit the scope and application of claims.
o Use of logical connectives that express and emphasize relationships between sentences, paragraphs, and sections.
o Consideration of the implications for the student writer (the concepts and predictions of genre theory will assist you, here).
I would also like you to
o include a Title page with a title that adequately names and describes your research and a References or Works Cited page (see Library website for guidelines)
o double-space your work and use a 12 pt font
o 5-7 pages
o Do not reference titles, but reference the authors– analyze how they write in discipline
o include the word count of your assignment (e.g. (1150 words)
NOTE!!!
These are the articles I have chosen to compare citations and meta-discourse (or modality, whichever is easier)

I will also include some articles from Hyland. With the points you’re critiquing, please use Hyland to back up those points. PLEASE MAKE A CHART.
