Analytical Essay Prompt Option I.In Chapter Two of The Witch-Hunt in Early Modern Europe, Levack discusses a cluster ofideas that he labels “the cumulative concept of witchcraft” (29-56). Choose a textualprimary source assigned in this course (or two primary sources, if you prefer) and write athesis-driven essay that answers this question: How does this source (or, these sources)illustrate, challenge, or otherwise relate to the “cumulative concept of witchcraft” thatLevack discusses? Some ideas to consider :What are the main components of ” cumulative concept of witchcraft”? Which of them do you seereflected in the textual primary source(s) that you are analzying in this essay? How so? Doesreading the primary source tell you something more about Levack’s “”cumulative concept ofwitchcraft” than you would have known if you had only read Levack? Does the source seem tochallenge any aspect of what Levack says?Tip: You do not necessarily have to address every aspect of the “cumulative concept ofwitchcraft” in your essay. You should demonstrate a familiarity with all its main components asLevack describes them, but it is possible to write a strong essay discussing just one or twocomponents of it. Just be clear that you are doing this if you choose to do so.
The text of the essay should be 700 to 1,000 words long, typed, double-spaced, with oneinch margins. This usually corresponds to about two to three pages of typed, doublespaced text. Include a word count at the end of the statement (but before any bibliography). Theword count should correspond only to the principal text itself; exclude anyfootnotes/endnotes, bibliography, etc. Please put your name and the prompt option you have chosen at the top of the first pageof your paper or, preferably, on a separate cover sheet. The body of the essay should havepage-numbers, beginning with the first page of text. (In other words, if you choose toinclude a cover sheet, don’t number it.) All quoted material must be clearly indicated with quotation marks or block-quoteformatting, and the source indicated. The source of paraphrased material must also beprovided. Parenthetical references to course materials are acceptable forms of citingyour sources, e.g., (Levack, 50). If you are only using assigned class materials (Levackand materials on D2L), you do not need to include a formal bibliography or reference list. While you are not required to use any additional sources besides those assigned in class, ifyou do use any, they must be indicated in full formal footnotes using Chicago Manual ofStyle/Turabian Notes-Bibliography format. (Note: I will accept other citation formats aslong as the format is specified and the citations contain all the same bibliographicinformation specified in Chicago style, though I do reserve the right to request additionalbibliographic information for any sources cited in non-Turabian/Chicago format.)
Source requirements Each essay must be based on at least two sources assigned in this course before due dateoption 2. (For essay prompt I, one of the sources by definition is Levack.) At least one of the sources must be a textual (written) primary source. The two sources must be by different authors or creators. For example, two differentexcerpts from the Malleus Maleficarum do not count as separate primary sources. (Youmay use multiple excerpts from the Malleus Maleficarum, but they would only count asone source.)
