Did the men who wrote the Constitution in 1787 exercise social responsibility?  Did they take care to provide constitutional benefits to all elements of American society?   When I talk about “all elements of American society” I am talking about all the people in America at the time.  Did they all share equally in the benefits provided by the Constitution?  Were some people, or groups of people, favored over others?  If some did not have equal benefits, did they ever acquire those benefits?  How?  Provide specific examples in your paper. 

Sources for this paper include the Constitution of the United States which counts as your primary source and at least two secondary sources.  For purposes of this paper, I am going to define secondary sources as books written by historians or other authors with knowledge about the subject.

Instructions: 

1. There should be 1″ margins all around your paper.

2. You should include a bibliography with at least 3 sources.  The Constitution is one source.  The other two should be secondary sources.  You can have more than 3 sources.

3. You should include citations in your paper.

4. Do not use a running head on this paper. 

Notes from the Instructor: 

Here are a few random thoughts about this paper.  I am going to assume that you have read these when I grade your paper.

1. I expect your paper to be well written.  I expect you to use proper sentence structure, spelling, punctuation, and anything else that comes under the general heading of grammar.  Failure to do so will affect your grade.  There is a “Writing Skills” document that provides some tips for better writing.  I expect you to consult that guide and follow those grammar rules.  The maximum number of points you will lose for grammar is 20. You are college students.  I expect you to know how to write.  There are multiple free websites that will check grammar for you.  I suggest you use one of them. 

2. I expect your paper to be well organized with a beginning (or introduction), a text in the middle, and a conclusion.  You should not present any new ideas or new material in your conclusion. 

3. You should not either begin or end your paper with a direct quote.

4. You should use citations in your paper.  The easiest method of citing material is to use what is called parenthetical citations.  I will provide more information about citations in a separate announcement.

5. In a paper this short, you should not use direct quotes.  I expect this paper to be in your own words.  Using direct quotes means you did not write that part of the paper.  This paper will be better if you do not use any direct quotes.  I discourage you from using direct quotes.  Excessive use of direct quotes will affect your grade.

6. Since you are going to include a cover page, there is no need to put the title of your paper at the top of the first page.  You should begin your paper at the top of page 1.  While the absolute minimum length is 2 full pages, I would recommend writing a couple of lines on page 3.  That way you know you are not going to be penalized for not meeting the absolute minimum length requirement.  The penalty for not meeting the absolute minimum length requirement will be at least 30 points.  It could be more depending on the actual length of your paper.  (You should be aware that a “full page” written in a 12 point font that I like will include about 24 lines of text.)
