1. Watch Frederick Douglass: Inventor of the Selfie (7:37) –a video featuring Kenneth B. Morris, Jr., the great-great-great-grandson of Frederick Douglass.
2. Prompt Question: How does Frederick Douglass use words to “take a selfie” challenging racist perceptions about people who are enslaved?
Requirements
· Focus on one passage to support your answer. This should be a passage from The Narrative where Douglass describes himself. Find a passage that seems like a snapshot of Douglass. The passage should contain imagery (language that appeals to the senses). Imagery is showing language, as opposed to telling language.
· In your essay, draw your reader’s attention to how the words you quote support your answer to the prompt question
· Don’t summarize the points made in the video. Craft an essay that supports your argument about how the words Douglass chooses to depict himself challenge racist perceptions.
· HOW TO USE QUOTES: Use MLA in-text citations.
o Example: Douglass narrates, “I, of course, kept the vow I made after the fight with Covey and struck back again, regardless of consequences” (66). This description of him sticking to his “vow,” or promise, challenges the racist idea that an enslaved person has violent instincts, like an animal, because it shows his rationality, forethought, self-control, and decision-making powers.
o Embed your quotations into your sentences. Use signal phrases to announce to your reader that a quote is coming. The signal phrase in the above example is highlighted in yellow. For a refresher on embedding quotations, watch this short video
· Minimum Length: Three (3) complete pages (top to bottom), Times New Roman font, double-spaced
