There are five (5) tasks for the Legal Process Project, as follows:
Legal Process Project Tasks:
(1) Analysis of the Constitution
Read and analyze the Constitution and Bill of Rights. Choose the institutional power and the personal right you believe to be the most important, and explain why; choose the institutional power and the personal right you would remove, and explain why, and add power and a right that you would include, and explain why (two to four pages, double-spaced).
(2) Two Examples of Homeland Security Issues in Art or Popular Culture
For this task, identify two expressions, representations, statements, etc. of a homeland security topic in art or popular culture and explain the relation and significance of the work.
(3) Identification of Two Pre-9/11 Homeland Security Events
As we study this new concept of “homeland security,” we quickly learn that threats to national security are not new. In fact, the United States faced major threats to its existence even before it was officially a nation. Identify and describe two such events in U.S. history that occurred prior to September 11, 2001, and explain why this event/threat was similar to current homeland security events.
(4) Legal Counsel Exercise
You will be given a scenario, where you are the legal counsel for a militant nongovernmental group. This is a foreign group, with concerns about the ability of the U.S. to attack this group, detention of group members, either in other foreign countries or in Guantanamo Bay, military tribunals, spying on U.S. citizens by the U.S., attacking the U.S., the U.S. Constitution, and the U.S. Federal government. You need to write out the answers to the specific questions that will be provided in the classroom, answering all questions fully, and providing citations and references where appropriate.
(5) Statute Draft
For this task, you need to identify the next great idea in homeland security. Articulate and format your idea as the introduction to a new legislative act. You will be provided the introduction to the USA PATRIOT Act as an example of how to format the task. Formulate an idea for a new law regarding Homeland Security and using the USA PATRIOT Act as a template, write out the introduction to your new Act.
