Substance abuse can have devastating consequences to individuals, families, communities, and society as a whole. These consequences can be felt at the national, as well as, local levels of society. The impact may be personal, social, economic, as well as, physical. Stakeholders involved at the local, as well as, national level include, individuals, families, nurses and other health care workers, health care organizations, drug and alcohol rehab centers, therapists, drug companies, physicians, and pharmacists. There must prevention strategies at the national, as well as, local levels. Society should set substance use prevention measures and programs as a priority in order to promote health and reduce social harm. (Renstrom, 2017).
Substance abuse has a major impact on individuals, families, and communities. The effects of substance abuse are cumulative, significantly contributing to costly social, physical, mental, and public health problems. (HealthyPeople 2020). Some of these problems include teenage pregnancy, HIV/AIDS, other sexually transmitted diseases, motor vehicle accidents, domestic violence, child abuse, and physical violence. (HealthyPeople 2020). “Abuse of tobacco, alcohol, and illicit drugs is costly to our Nation, exacting more than $740 billion annually in costs related to crime, lost work productivity and health care.” (National Institute on Drug Abuse).
Elaborate how technology such as the electronic medical record might assist in implementing, evaluating, or sustaining an evidence-based intervention to address the identified problem.
According to this week’s lesson, the use of information technology to provide EBP is critical to improving the quality of care while maximizing patient safety and cost savings. As demands for established clinical evidence and practice guidelines increase, healthcare organizations and providers, including the DNP practice scholar, must utilize information technology to ensure reliable evidence is translated into practice. (Chamberlain University, 2021). Telehealth communications have been found to improve nurse-patient interactions through application of King’s Goal Attainment Theory among pregnant woman that suffer from Opioid Use Disorder (OUD). (Abebe, 2020).
