Informal, journal entry style discussions about the readings, films

These will be informal, journal entry style discussions about the readings, films, or any material we have discussed during the week- what is the main theme, idea, and argument of the reading? What does it say about gender relations in South Asia? What does it say about the political institutions, and systemic oppression? What does the reading tell you about religious institutions? What does the reading tell you bout ethnic identities, and class? Why is it relevant to understanding gender identities and womens lives in India, Pakistan and Bangladesh? Feel free to bring in your experiences, knowledge and observations about the issues under discussion. You can use first person narrative, and a casual style. Your response can be a series of questions that emerge from your readings.

Responses likely to receive check pluses are 800 words, have direct quotations, descriptions of scene, and analysis- these essays dont just summarize, but ANALYZE and discuss, critique, or question the material.  They may incorporate personal reflections, previous knowledge, and also questions. The reading can lead to questions, perplexing concepts that the essay can address and give voice to. Essays may also critique the material and show light on its gaps, shortcomings.
