This 7-8 page argument essay should be densely packed using the tools and techniques you have built during the course to examine a particular film or other well-defined topic. Use your research to support your argument where necessary. Show what you have learned from your research building and the making of meaning as you view the film. The final essay should be a combination of support from sources and your original ideas about the film as well as details of scenes or other cinematic elements. Below are some possible approaches.
A single film: Memories of murder (Bong Joon Ho, 2003)
You can analyze a particular film and show how it fits (or doesnt) into the national cinema from which it came. What influence did it have in its own country? What was its reception outside of the country? Did it impact other national films or share ideas adopted in other countries? Was there cultural impact?
Argument structure:
Introduction Begin with a couple of sentences of context, setting up time, place and the concept, topic or event about which the film was made. Then move right into details about your films. Preview with plenty of detail of what you will be arguing. The last sentence of the paragraph should be your thesis which follows naturally from the background and set up you have just given.
Body Use your original thesis to shape everything that happens in the body. Assert your thesis repeatedly each time moving forward and building your argument. Use your sources to back up what you are arguing. Dont overdue the history or biography of your topic or director. Dont summarize the movie (only in small portions needed to convey the meaning you are creating in your argument). Transition carefully between paragraphs to build your argument.
Conclusion Wrap up but dont repeat everything. Give a sense of what you have just argued. Make a call for more attention to the matter or an appreciation of the art of the film. Dont be too lengthy.
