The nursing profession makes up the largest percentage of healthcare workers. For the past 18 years, nursing has been voted the most trusted profession by the public (Gallup, 2020). The global contribution of nurses to public health is widely accepted as a positive one. According to the World Health Organization (2013), nurses play an integral part of all healthcare services and maximizing their contribution to health is essential to increase access to safe patient care and improve the lives of patients through education. What evidence is available that supports this claim? The nurse authors of this did the work for us! Drs. Coster, Watkins and Norman conducted a literature review to determine the existing research on the impact of nursing on patient outcomes globally.
Your Academic Writing class recently explored how to search databases, such as CINAIL. This study also used that database, as well as several others. Overall 61 articles were located and a summary of the following areas were analyzed: nursing in acute care settings; nurses’ involvement in public health; the contribution of specialist nurse and nurse-led services to the management of chronic disease; comparison of care provided by nurses and doctors; and task shifting to invasive procedures.
- What is a literature review? After , can you determine the level of research of the article we are discussing? Is this article a primary, secondary, or tertiary source? Of the 61 articles located, how many were labeled as “high impact”? What does low, moderate, and high impact mean? Define a Cochrane review.
- In your own words, summarize the findings of the literature review. Were there any limitations of the studies found? What gaps were found in the state of the science in regards to the impact of professional nursing on patient outcomes globally? What is your take away from reading the article? Is there anything in particular that you found to be profound while reading the article? Lastly, and most importantly, why is this specific topic important to individual nurses?

- Do not write a formal paper with title, abstract or reference pages. You must use headings to delineate sections of your narrative that speak to the question(s). Be brief, yet concise, when answering the questions and include citations to support your statements.
- Reference all sources you’ve cited within your answers at the end of your narrative. It is required that you use two current, scholarly resources.
- Do not upload a document, if you do so this will not be graded. It is best for you to write your discussion post as a Word document and cut and paste it into the discussion post. Many students have reported losing their work after typing within the Canvas discussion board. Of course, this meant the student had no saved copy and had to re-do the assignment.
