Two Specialty Courts

Overview

Arguably the single, greatest trend in the American criminal court system is to provide rehabilitation to defendants who qualify under special categories such as domestic violence, mental health issues, Veteran status, drug addiction, and others. Restoring the defendant to whole health rather than just focusing on punishment has become the goal for specialty courts. Not all defendants are the same and not all should receive the same punishment: specialty courts further this goal but struggle as they often rely on grants and many professionals to provide the best care for specialty court defendants.

Instructions

In a 700-word minimum essay or 10-minute creative presentation please analyze at least 2 specialty courts. The book does not mention Veterans Trauma Court so consider it or any others as possibilities as well.

1. 1. Written assignments should be a minimum of 700 words. Creative presentations should be a minimum of 10 minutes and should have some form of speaker notes either embedded (PowerPoint) or attached, as well as a Microsoft Word version of your reference page (or Reference slide).
   2. All assignments should be written in third person/neutral language. Do not use first person language such as “I,” “you,” “we,” “us,” “our,” etc. unless such language is contained in a quote from a scholarly source.
   3. All assignments shall conform to APA formatting. Two sample APA papers are available for your reference in the Syllabus Submodule: Sample APA Papers in the Content area of this course. APA for PowerPoints includes a full “Title Page” slide, proper in-text citations for paraphrased or quoted material on each slide, and a Reference(s) slide.
   4. All assignments in this course should have a minimum of 3 scholarly source (.edu, .gov, .org and/or the class book), quoted and/or paraphrased material from the source, include proper in-text citations and a separate, properly formatted reference page or reference slide.
   5. When you have completed the assignment, save a copy for yourself in an easily accessible place and submit a copy to the Module 2 Assignment 2 folder.
      1. Your assignment will automatically be submitted to Turnitin. PowerPoints can be submitted there, too. You have to hold yourself accountable for any other creative presentation! Everything needs in-text citations and references;
      2. Turnitin is activated for you so review what Turnitin says! If you have to revise your assignment, I will always accept the last assignment you submit subject to any late penalties;
      3. Please note you may have a high Turnitin “plagiarism” ratio SIMPLY because you did not format the in-text citations correctly.
      4. If you have not given proper credit in the form of in-text citations for either quotes or paraphrases, make sure to do so! Any form of plagiarism including self-plagiarism (quoting from your own writings) is not acceptable!
