Background

We have just started to work together this semester, and we have also started to learn something about how you can succeed in this class and in college. We have very briefly discussed some basic ideas about what it means to be successful, as well as one more complex idea: mindsets.

Your Task

In a short essay, summarize the basic idea of mindsets (including one short quotation from ) and give examples from your own experience to answer the writing question in the box below.

How To Do It

These are recommendations rather than requirements.

• Your first paragraph might be a short summary of the idea of mindsets: What is a fixed mindset? What is a growth mindset? You might also briefly explain how these concepts help us to understand why we succeed or do not succeed at some tasks. You should end this paragraph with a thesis statement.
• Your thesis statement should directly answer the writing question. Feel free to use Iafter all, Im asking about you!

Some examples:

    • I am lucky because I have a growth mindset about almost everything.
    • I am working on having a growth mindset about English.

Note that these are not high school formula thesis statements with a list of three things: now is the time for you to begin growing out of those.

• The body paragraphs should support your thesis by providing examples and further explanations.
• At the end of your essay, in your conclusion, state whether you believe you need to change your mindset. If you do need to change, how might you do so?

Here are some ways that you might develop the essay (you do not have to answer all of these questions):

• What makes you think you have a fixed mindset in a certain area? Use examples!
• What are the consequencesfor youof having a fixed mindset? Use examples!
• Do you believe it is possible or necessary to change your fixed mindset? What might help you change?
• What makes you think you have a growth mindset in a certain area?
• How does having a growth mindset help you?
• How might we encourage others to have a growth mindset?
