Question A: Determine if sexism plays a part in college major and career choices for males and females.

Research shows that male and female college students often major in different fields. For example, males major in architecture and computer science while females major in psychology and education. Create an informal survey to distribute to a random sample of both male and female students (at least 30) at your college asking specifically why they decided on their major, if you can. Compile data and share with the class. Determine if sexism plays a part in college major and career choices for males and females.

Question B: Should the Federal Government Step in and Regulate Pay? 

The global recession that began in December 2007 has been described as, “one of the most difficult financial and economic episodes in modern history” by U.S. Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernake. Millions of people around the globe have either lost their jobs and/or have had hours and benefits cut. Millions globally have also lost a large portion of their retirement funds and in most cases have also lost significant equity in their homes. Meanwhile as been reported in the media, Chief Executor Officers (CEOs) of the world’s largest companies continue to receive extravagant bonuses even though their company profits have plummeted and many of their employees have been laid off or fired due to the “bottom line.” Is this ethical? Why or why not? Should anything be done about this (e.g., should the federal government step in and regulate pay)?

Why are the elderly often marginalized, mistreated, and overall not respected in American society? Compare this to how other cultures treat their elderly. For example, experts predicted that in 2017 tax revenues needed to cover Social Security benefits will run out. What do you suppose will be the ramifications of this reality for both the elderly and youth populations. What are some suggestions, from a Sociological perspective, to this lingering social problem. Are we just putting a temporary bandage on the problem?
