Also, World War I (in which many artists were involved) generated personal internal commentary on the nature of war; its experience and aftermath lent itself to the Expressionism that developed after.
Later, with the advent of the Nazi Party and Hitler and ultimately World War II, art in Europe suffered the stigma of the degenerate label.
