Fallacies are when a persuasive argument is missing logic or has false content (Links to an external site.). There are many and several have different names. Read over this list: Fallacies.docx. It’s not all the fallacies, but it’s a good start.

By understanding fallacies, you can pinpoint weaknesses in your own arguments and in your critic’s point of view.

Instructions:

1.) Please review the fallacies in the document above and choose 3 fallacies from different groups. With your chosen fallacies, do some research and define them in your own words. Then create your own unique example for your chosen fallacy.

Non Sequitur

This phrase translates to “non-sequential” or “does not follow.” This fallacy occurs when a conclusion is pulled from information that does not have a connection.

Example: If you are a pacifist, then you do not support the troops protecting the country.

This example actually falls into a couple of other fallacies, too, but the stress here is that supporting troops is not connected to liking violence.
