Thompson Family Case Study
Assessed clients presenting with posttraumatic stress disorder
The DSM-5 describes PTSD as the result of having been exposed to; witnessing; esperiencing repeated or extreme exposure to aversive events; events occurring to a close relative or friend; or one or more of the following event(s): death or threatened serious injury, or actual or threatened sexual violence (Wheeler, 2014). William Thompson of the family meet this criteria. He is an AAM war veteran that was deployed to Iraq. He became homeless after his return. Due to his substance abuse use his job was in jeporady related to substance abuse. He was just married could not pay his mortagage. William and his wife was force to move in with his brother. Studies show that alcohol misuse and abuse, hazardous drinking, and binge drinking are common among OEF and OIF veterans. (Substance Abuse and Mental Health Service Adminstration, 2012) Veterans sometimes drink alcohol as away to numb the difficult feelings and erase the memories related to their war experiences (Service Abuse and Mental Health Service Adminstration, 2012). Studies show that between 36.9 and 50.2 percent of OEF and OIF veterans in the VA healthcare system have received a mental disorder diagnosis, such as PTSD or depression ()Service Abuse and Mental Health Service Adminstration, 2014).
Therapeutic Approach
Trauma focused research work; practice-generated knowledge about trauma interventions; and the lessons articulated by survivors of traumatic experiences who have ha involvement in multiple service sectors (Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Adminstration, 2014).
According to (Kobayashi et al., (2015), management of PTSDwith SSRIs and SNRIs are the first line of treatment in managing the disorder by effectively reducing the three core symptoms of reexperiencing, avoidance, and hyperarousal (Kobayashi et al., 2015). Non- pharmacologic approach is Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) is consider the most effective for PTSD.
Outcomes for client
Mr. Thompson will benefit from CBT therapy and medication regimen. CBT is a system of psychotherapy based on a theory which maintains as how an individual structures his or her experiences largely determines how he or she feels and behaves (Wheeler, 2014). Mr. Thompson may not have been honest with the family about his problems. He was most likely experiencing trauma from his war deployment. Substance abuse may have been his escape goat for dealing with his traumatic experiences. Even though the family had their issues as well. Grandmother had experience a traumatic event the loss of her husband. The family all could have used some type of therapy.
