How is the technique of automatism visually evident in the painting
Module 5: Worksheet 2: Early 20th Century European and African Art Analysis
As you read, European art of the early 20th century showed a dramatic break with the tradition of Western art. In your discussion, you’ll examine this outcome in the realm of portraiture and self-portraiture. This worksheet will give you the opportunity to practice your analysis of different styles or “isms” that emerged during this period to better understand their particular visual characteristics. Also, in an effort to briefly depart from the Eurocentric focus of this class, this worksheet will invite you to examine one non-Western tradition – that of African art – in appreciation of its unique forms and its incredible influence on European art of this period.
For this worksheet, you’ll apply what you’ve learned from your reading of the textbook toward analyses of select artworks. Once your grades are posted, you can then use my feedback to enhance your understanding and apply these concepts toward your final project. Using three to four sentences each, answer the questions below. Make sure your answers are thoughtfully written and edited for errors in spelling and punctuation. Then, submit your answers by posting them to the Assignments dropbox by the due date. While you are not required to consult any additional resources for this assignment (beyond your textbook), you may wish to explore these artists and their work. If you do, be sure to properly cite your source if you integrate any of this research in your post.
