Hersey-Blanchard Situational Leadership Style Self-Assessment
This is a situational leadership style self-assessment based on task-oriented and relationship-oriented leadership behaviors. This is discussed in your textbook (chapter 12 (12.4). Complete the following self-assessment to determine your Hersey-Blanchard leadership style.
After you complete the Hersey-Blanchard self-assessment, take a moment to review Tuckman’s stages of team development. There’s an interesting connection here that I’m hoping you will see having to do with situational leadership and team development. On the worksheet that follows, I’ll be interested to see if you can make the connection!
· LMX Ratings Assessment
This assessment is from your textbook Chapter 12 (12.5). It’s a different kind of assessment in that it gauges your perceptions of the leadership effectiveness of those who you report to – or more accurately, how effective the leader/follower relationship is in your eyes. I really like this instrument because it gets at some of the key elements of transformational leadership, and the extent to which those leaders you work with employ transformational (versus only transactional) approaches to leadership. There is a great deal of academic research happening at the moment around the concept of transformational leadership, although I couldn’t find a suitable assessment (for free) that I could offer up here. In OGL 300, you’ll have a chance to take a much deeper dive into the leadership styles literature, and transformational leadership is an interesting topic indeed!.
Then watch the following mini lecture by Simon Sinek, one of the world’s leading experts on leadership:
· Question 1: Consider the self-assessment above that you completed, and consider Simon Sinek’s observations. Reflect on what they all reveal about you. Write a paragraph of at least 150 words that accomplishes the following:
o Identify the name of the self-assessment you completed.
o Report the results/scores of the self-assessment.
o Evaluate how accurately you believe that these results/scores describe you.
o Conclude by presenting the greatest strengths you perceive from these results and/or–perhaps more importantly–the greatest opportunities for growth.
· Question 2: Select one lesson from the reading that you find especially interesting and that will make you a better colleague.
o Briefly describe that lesson and why it is important. Don’t forget to include the page citation like (Bauer and Erdogan, 143).
o Explain how you will apply that lesson to yourself in your current or future organization, and
o Explain how those efforts will make you a better and more effective colleague.
· Question 3: Select a different lesson from the reading that will make you a better leader.
o Briefly describe that lesson and why it is important. Don’t forget to include the page citation like (Bauer and Erdogan, 159).
o Explain how you will apply that lesson to yourself in your current or future organization, and
o Explain how those efforts will make you a better and more effective leader.
*150 words for each question that apply concepts from the readings and included in-text citations with page references to those concepts.
