As a student, it is important to know which resources are credible and which resources maynot be.Have you ever read an article, news story, or book that you felt had bias, or used a resource that the instructor identified asbiased? So today we want to talk about CRAAPO– C-R-A-A-P-O. Means looking at the resource through the eyes of its currency,relevance, accuracy, authority, purpose, and objectivity.Specifically, we are going to address the final part of CRAAPO, which is purpose and objectivity.Why is being diligent in using credible sources important? Well, it’s important to use credible and non-biased sources in all of yourclasses so that you can learn accurately and effectively. It is also important to identify bias and credibility in the context of ourpersonal and professional lives.Moreover, in this course, you will be discussing some controversial and sensitive topics. So knowing which sources are giving youcredible information is of great importance.As learned in previous courses, our beliefs are developed by factors around us and can keep all of us from being absolutelyneutral when sharing information. This is also true for authors of numerous mediums, such as articles, textbooks, and blogs, toname just a few.Jacob, can you think of an example?Let’s see. Propaganda?Yes, exactly, Jacob. Propaganda is biased or misleading information used to promote or publicize a particular political cause orpoint of view. An important clarification, though, is that of the distinction between perspective and bias.Perspective is the point of view that a person sees an event from, while bias is when a source is clearly one sided in its descriptionof the event. We all have perspective, whether we like it or not. So let’s look deeper into purpose and objectivity.Evaluating a source with purpose and objectivity means that you are asking if there is bias or personal perspective being given tothe information. It is good to ask yourself these questions when you are reading or listening to information.What point of view does the author represent? Is the source arguing for or against something? Is information based on facts fromresearch findings or solid evidence? Is the resource tied to any financial support, such as a grant from an organization? Is theinformation opinion based? Is the source associated with a body that promotes an agenda that leans far right conservative or farleft liberal?Does the information include extremely positive or extremely negative points? What is the purpose of the information– to teach,persuade, entertain, or sell?This all might seem obvious. But knowing what to look for is important.So here’s how you can check for hidden or less transparent bias. See if facts are supported by research and are cited. Identify ifany financial support, such as a grant, as aligned to the resource.Assess the advertisements placed on the source and what these advertisements represent. Use search engines to learn moreabout the author, organization, or institution and their affiliations.
Look up previous information written or spoken by the author. Check for any grant funding associations, and check the domainextension– that is, dot com, dot edu, or dot gov. Remember that dot com could be anything.Here’s a quick example. Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, comes across as a great source of information. But they also have thepolicy of allowing all visitors to change their content on some pages.
